Can I maintain heating with electric operation even though the fresh water in the water heater has been drained?

Yes, you can use the heating system as usual, even if the boiler is empty. As the electric cartridges are placed in the heater’s glycol tank and are therefore always in liquid (provided you have glycol in your heating system).

Can I run the heater without fresh water?

Yes, it is possible to run the heater without fresh water. However, you should not run the system without glycol.

Propane or butane - which type of LPG should I use?

At Alde, we recommend the use of propane throughout northern Europe. Propane can be used down to -42°C while butane is more suitable for temperatures from +5°C and above.

Does it matter what type of LPG bottle I use for winter camping?

Steel or aluminium LPG cylinders work well. However, composite cylinders should be avoided as the gas is difficult to gasify below 0°C.

Why doesn't the vehicle get warm in winter when I run the heater on electricity only?

In winter or when it is really cold outside, it is sometimes not enough to heat the vehicle with electricity alone. Then you need to supplement the heat from the electric cartridges with LPG heating.

There are no general temperatures for what the heater should be able to heat on electricity alone. It depends on the vehicle’s insulation, size, system dimensioning, which differs from vehicle to vehicle.

To get the temperature up as quickly as possible in a cooled down vehicle, we recommend running the heater on combined gas and electricity if possible. The energy output from the electric cartridges is up to 3 kW, while the gas output is as much as 5.5 kW, which together gives an output equivalent to 8.5 kW.

For example, at around 5°C and below, the size of the vehicle and technical building factors may mean that 2 kW of electricity is not enough to achieve sufficient heating comfort. In this case, you may need to activate both electricity and gas at the same time, to get more energy to power your heating system.

Can I have the heating system running on maintenance heat even though the fresh water in the water heater has been drained?

Yes, you can use the heating system as usual, even if the water heater is empty.

What should I consider when storing my vehicle for the winter?

Firstly, drain all fresh water from the water heater via the drain valve at the heater. If you’re not sure how to do this, read the instruction manual for the heater. If you have an Alde compact 3030 plus or Alde Flow, there is an extra safety valve to open for correct emptying.

Check that all fresh water has been drained. Don’t forget to open the fresh water taps as well. Also check that you have enough frost protection in the glycol in the heating system so that it can withstand the temperature at which the vehicle will be winterised.
