Alde Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV): how to fit

Does the shower’s water temperature fluctuate when you’re using it and you’re concerned that the water might get too hot, that you (or a youngster) might be scalded when using it? If so, Alde’s Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) could be the answer, and this will work with any water heating system!

Easy installation for any outlet

The Alde TMV can be installed to any hot water outlet in your vehicle, but probably the one where it’s most useful is the shower. It’s factory set to 41°C but can be adjusted to suit, and once fitted will give a stable water temperature.

A little while ago, we fitted one to our caravan’s shower. It’s simple to fit and to adjust and I’ll show you how.

Start by finding the hot and cold feeds to the shower (or whichever outlet you want).

  1. Looking at the TMV unit, the water inlets/outlet form a ‘T’.
  2. Cut the hot water feed and using suitable connectors join the feed from the boiler to the arm marked ‘H’ (hot).
  3. The other end of the hot water pipe (the one that goes to the shower tap) needs to be connected to the bottom of the ‘T’ (you’ll see an arrow pointing down to this in the brass casting).
  4. With the hot water connection made, you need to inset a ‘T’ connection into the cold water supply to the shower tap (so that cold-water can still be fed directly to it). To that ‘T’, make a connection to the ‘C’ (cold) arm of the TMV, thus you’ll have a hot and cold feed to the arms of the TMV with a mixed water outlet from the bottom of it.

The TMV comes with a wall mounting bracket, so this should be attached to a suitable point in your vehicle and then the TMV clipped into it.

Adjusting the water temperature, step-by-step

  • With your water system filled and the hot water up to temperature, turn your shower tap to its hottest setting and turn the water fully on.
  • Once the heated water starts flowing at the shower head, it should remain at a constant 41°C.

Should you want the maximum temperature of the water at the shower head to be cooler:

  • Pull off the red cap on the TMV (which has a triangular ‘hole’ in it) and using that on the triangular head on the TMV (underneath where the red cap attaches),
  • Turn the red cap clockwise little by little until you reach the desired shower head temperature. Conversely, if you want it hotter, turn the valve anti-clockwise.
  • Make small adjustments and give the new temperature time to get to the shower head before adjusting it more.

When the temperature is right, replace the red cap, and that’s it.

Enjoy a perfect shower temperature!

The TMV will regulate the maximum temperature, but if you want a cooler shower than the maximum, simply turn the shower tap to the desired setting.

You can now be confident that the water temperature at the shower head will be both constant, and that there will be no accidents with hot water.
